Family Temple Trip

Last Saturday, we went to the temple with some other kids in our Primary.  We had a great time going on a "treasure hunt" to find certain things on the temple grounds.

Here's a "secret" path we found on our walk.

We found both of the fountains.

The flowers are always beautiful on the temple grounds.  We had to find certain colors of flowers.

I love talking to them about the importance of the temple.  I always think about this quote from President Monson whenever I take pictures of my boys touching the temple, "As you touch the temple, the temple touches you."

Carter at 3

On April 4th we had Carter's well visit at the doctor's.  I was super nervous about how he would do, but he did awesome!  He weighed almost 34 lb. (72%) and was 3'1" tall (31%).  Caleb received a shot at his 3-year-old appointment, and it was very traumatic.  It must have been a flu shot, however, because Carter didn't need to get a shot at his appointment.  (He is up to date on his flu vaccine, thanks to the flu mist!)  He did great with his blood pressure, which is probably the scariest part.  When the doctor was trying to get him to talk by asking questions, he clammed up and became real shy.  So she wasn't able to gauge the level of his speech, but I think Carter speaks really well.  He uses complete sentences and is able to share his feelings really well.  There are still some words he says that are tricky to understand, however.

Carter's personality at three years old is feisty.  His mood is directly affected by how much sleep he gets.  If he does not have enough sleep, he is super cranky and whiny all day until he can take a nap.  We're constantly working on accepting a no answer, using nice words, and choosing to be happy.  Carter can also be very stubborn and does not give in easily.

We all get a good laugh at some of the things Carter says and does.  He can be so cute and adorable!  Some of his common sayings that I have recorded in his journal lately include:

Me: Carter what are you doing in there?
Carter: (innocently) Nupping!

Matt or I will read books to the boys each night before bed and try to fit one adult and two kids lying side by side on a twin bed.  Sometimes if an adult and Caleb are already lying down, Carter will say, "But there's no room for Carter!"  I think it's so funny when he talks about himself in third person.

Carter likes to do some "daring" things lately like climbing on some bars at the playground.  Whenever he is doing something that is challenging, he'll look at me and say, "Mommy, you can't do this because you'll fall and hurt yourself, but I can because I'm big."

If Carter naps during the day, then going to bed on time at night is a challenge.  His favorite stall tactic he uses to get out of bed is to come up to Matt or I and ask, "Why do bad guys fight?"  Matt and I think it is so funny every time he does it.  I always answer, "Because they're mean."

Carter is really into good guys and bad guys right now.  Sometimes, to my embarrassment, he'll point to someone while in public and say loudly,  "Momma, is he a bad guy?"

Another stall tactic Carter uses if he knows we're nearing bed time is to say, "Can I watch a movie just 10 minutes?"  If we give in and so okay, of course after the 10 minutes is up he says, "But it's not over yet!!!" And the tantrum begins. :o)

Usually when he asks that question to me, I'll say no.  When he starts throwing a tantrum lately I've said, "Why don't you go ask your Daddy and see what he says?"  (In other words, go be Daddy's problem.)  Each time I've said that though, he says, "But Daddy will say no."

He wanted an Incredible Hulk birthday cake for his birthday.  He picks up on some of these things from his older brother or cousin.  We compromised on a Captain America cake since his shield is round and therefore easier for me to make.

If you say no to Carter or he doesn't get his way, he stomps off and says, "Then I won't be your friend anymore!" And then some sort of crying fit ensues.

Carter's little trademark was his missing upper left lateral tooth.  I had x-rays done on it when he was two, and we discovered that the baby tooth is there, but it was likely that the parent tooth was missing to push it down.  (The x-ray couldn't show the parent teeth for the front teeth since they were so high up so we are not sure if it is there or not.)  We discussed that he would have to wear retainers starting in about 2nd grade and eventually get a permanent implant.  On April 5th, I discovered that his missing tooth is coming in!  I'm not sure if this means that a parent tooth is there or not, but I think it's good news that it's coming in at all!

Carter LOVES bananas.  He eats at least one every day.  He also really enjoys grapefruit.  Quite often we'll split one for breakfast along with some toast or a bowl of cereal.

Caleb and Carter can get along great as long as Caleb is in the mood to be patient with Carter.  They can also fight great too. :o)  It's funny to observe the differences in their personalities.  Caleb wants to obey and choose the right because he knows that makes us happy.  Carter wants to obey if there is some sort of tangible reward attached.  Caleb is a builder, Carter is a wrecker.  (For the first time the other day, however, Carter actually sat down by himself and tried to build some train tracks.  It lasted about 10 minutes!)  Caleb likes to save all his Halloween/Easter candy and just eat one or two a day.  Carter tries to eat it all in one day.  They're so different!

Carter knows his shapes and colors really well, but knows next to nothing about the alphabet.  I'm learning as a parent that how early a child knows these things is not important, just that he eventually learns them.  As a new mom, I felt that how early my child sat up or walked would prove their genius.  I now realize that whether your child walks at 10 months or 14 months doesn't matter.  I'm learning not to stress the small stuff anymore.  Carter has two years of preschool with me coming up where he'll know everything he needs to before school starts.

And after three years of mixing up Caleb's and Carter's names, I'm very much regretting that their names both start with C's.  I thought that it wouldn't matter what I named my kids figuring that I'd mix up all their names anyway.  I think it's much worse with starting with the same letter though!

He's feisty and cranky, but it's all just part of the terrible twos threes, right?  He'll grow out of it, we keep telling ourselves. Until then, we'll keep him around. :o)  We love our little Carter!

Month 6: Friendship

I would consider myself a shy person, and I prefer to keep to myself for the most part.  I usually don't go out of my way to say "hi" to people, but I always try to be friendly if a neighbor or someone approaches me.  For month 6 of my happiness project, I decided to work on going out of my way to be more friendly to people.  Here are some specific goals I worked on:

1) Say "hello" to everyone that I pass by when I'm out running.
2) Talk to the cashier when I check out at a store.
3) When making a business phone call (to pay a bill, etc.) where a person introduces him/herself by name, remember his/her name and call him by name throughout the phone conversation.
4) Be open to talking to people at the park.  If the baby is asleep, while I play with Carter at the park, I usually have an earbud in one ear listening to a book on tape.  What can I say? I love to read!  But I realize this isn't very social.
5) At a church function, go up and talk to people instead of sitting back and waiting for people to approach me.

All these things may seem so simple to other people, but they were all out of my comfort zone.  It took a concerted effort each time.  It was a good goal for me to force myself to be more social.  I really enjoyed getting to know some people throughout the month that otherwise probably wouldn't have happened!

For the month of March, I indexed my goal of 200 names and completed my running goal of a half marathon to get back in shape after having Bryson.  I completely spaced reading a church book, so I'll have to do better about that this month.

My goal for April to improve my happiness can only be one thing: packing and getting our house ready to put on the market.  I don't have time to focus on anything else right now!  We'd like to have our house on the market by the end of the month (move-in date for our new house is June 1) so each weekend is precious time to knock out big projects, and during the week I need to be organizing and packing things we aren't using right now.  It is so overwhelming!  I HATE moving, and I'm realizing that I like it even less with children since it's more things to go through and more things to move!  I should work on not complaining and just do it. :o)

This is a small thing, but I also have set a goal not to bite my nails at all this month.  It's a habit I've had off and on again throughout my life and something I need to currently break right now.  I plan to meet my indexing goal and read a church book as well.  I hope to get ahold of a copy or purchase a copy of The Continuous Atonement by Brad Wilcox.

Easter 2013

Carter got to participate in an egg hunt that a friend at church organized.  Caleb was sad to miss it because he was at school. :o(

Dyeing Easter eggs

We hosted Easter dinner this year and celebrated Carter's birthday at the same time with my family.  Clayton and Kara were able to join us as well before they took off for their cruise the next day!  Due to inclement weather, we had an egg hunt upstairs in our game room.  Notice the boxes we're starting to pack in the corner!  They kind of limited the space.

Surprise!

I turned 30 years old on March 30th.  Matt and I spent both Friday and Saturday painting as we are in the process of getting our house ready to put on the market.  So Saturday was just another day.  Matt's birthday is today, April 2nd, and this year we discussed that we wouldn't give each other presents as we're about to make big purchases associated with our move.  So for my birthday, he gave me two hours to myself during the day without any distractions.  I made Carter's birthday cake, talked to my good friend, Kim, then I took some time to read.  It was wonderful!

For Matt's 30th last year, I threw him a party, but I didn't even try to make it a surprise.  I knew I wouldn't be able to keep it a secret and would accidentally say something to clue him in.  So he was involved in the planning process of who to invite, what to eat, etc.  After his party, I told him not to throw a party for my 30th because I don't like to be the center of attention!

So the plan on Saturday after painting and working all day was to go fishing as a family (not my favorite activity, but it was Carter's birthday too).  Then we were going to indulge in getting a nicer pizza than Little Caesars.

If I would have been looking for clues, I would have seen them throughout the day.  Matt on the phone constantly, frequent text messages, and other little hints.  But, I was clueless.  So when we arrived at the designated location to meet Matt's family for fishing, I told Matt to take the boys down and start without me so that I could nurse the baby.  Then I started to recognize a few cars and finally began to clue in.

It was a great party with yummy food, and Matt really worked hard to organize it.  Since Carter and I share a birthday, he wanted to do something that would make it special for me.  It was really thoughtful and sweet of him.  I definitely felt loved from all my family and friends.  The only oversight was Matt didn't think to invite a few friends that I would have liked there.  Everyone asked me if I was truly surprised.  Definitely.  I would have taken the time to do my hair and make-up had I had any inkling!

Birthday Boy

Carter turned 3 years old on March 30th.  Here he is opening his presents.

He got three presents for his 3rd birthday!

Grandma has a tradition of taking each grandchild to Build a Bear for their third birthday.  Carter decided to make a monkey named Baba.

Giving Baba a bath

Rubbing the heart

All done!

He had a fun-filled day with Grandma:
playing at the mall tree house,

visiting the pet store and seeing baby chicks,

eating lunch at Chick-fil-A,

and riding the carousel.
It was such a special day for Carter, and it was so nice of Grandma to spend time with him!!

 Present from Gavin and Dallin

Captain America birthday cake (Carter asked for Incredible Hulk, but that one's a little far-fetched for my skills.)

He's so excited to be three years old!

Fun Run

One of the fundraisers that Caleb's Elementary school did recently was a Fun Run.  The kids were responsible to try to receive pledges for running 25-35 laps.  I won't go into how upset fundraisers make me in general as far as the school brainwashing my child into believing that he has to get all these fabulous prizes.  But I will say that I loved that this fundraiser promoted fitness.  Caleb was so excited to run in a race like Mommy!

Here's the race about to start.

Running through the tunnel

After running 35 laps

Each lap, the kids had to stop and get a mark on their shirt so that laps could be tracked.  Most kids politely waited in a line since it was a chance to rest before running another lap.  Caleb finagled himself to the front pretty quickly so that he could get a mark and keep running.  (There were no rules about waiting in line because if that had been a rule, Caleb definitely would have followed it.  He is afraid of doing anything wrong at school!!)  Since there was a limited amount of time to run, he wanted to make sure he got the maximum of 35 laps!  He was one of the first kids to finish and had a great time.
