Spring Break 2020

Spring Break pictures. We didn't know then that this would be our last week with friends for a long time due to COVID-19, social distancing, and quarantining.

Football game

Bryson enjoyed playing with some clay he found

And a visit to Ariane's house for her birthday.
Austin loving on their guinea pig.

Unfortunately while the older boys went to explore the ditch, Caleb took off a flipflop because something was stuck on the bottom. When he set his bare foot down, it happened to be on a piece of glass. He sliced his foot pretty bad. Fortunately it wasn't deep, and he didn't end up needing stitches. He will have a bad scar though.

Spring Break 2019

Keeping the boys entertained for Spring Break is a must. Otherwise they are at each other's throats and wanting to watch TV all day long!

Monday we got together with friends and the boys played poison ball (aka never-ending dodgeball).

Tuesday we saw How to Train a Dragon 3 in the theaters and the boys played with friends in the afternoon.

Wednesday we played in the nice sand at a creek near our house. Then we made slime and oobleck in the afternoon. We also played our new Harry Potter game that Caleb got for Christmas.

Matt took Thursday and Friday off of work, which is a big deal. He hasn't had many vacation days since starting his new company. So Thursday we made a 3 1/2 hour drive to an amusement park early in the morning, played all day, then drove home that night getting home at 10pm.

Our cousin, Sam, came with us. It was nice to have a girl in our party!

Matt on The Riddler with Carter and Caleb. (Zooming in you can see Matt in the center with his arms raised--he loves this ride.)

Friday/Saturday we went camping with 3 of my siblings and their families.
Friday afternoon hike

Camping isn't my favorite activity mostly due to all the work before and after combined with not sleeping well, but my kids all enjoy it and love spending time with their cousins. We enjoyed s'mores and cobbler all together and gathering around the fire to talk and share some funny and scary stories. Everyone slept pretty well during the night. It got down to 45 degrees so we were all chilled but stayed warm in our sleeping bags.

Hot chocolate Saturday morning

Austin and Morgan are good buds because they hang out together frequently.

We all enjoyed the break this week! A break from school, baseball, and seminary for Matt. Everyone got to sleep in a little longer and be lazier. It was some much-needed fun and relaxation!

Spring Break 2018

The highlight of our Spring Break was having a "beach" experience right by our home! We have a large creek near our neighborhood (the same creek that led to our flooding problems in September), and a friend showed us a section that has a great open sand area to play. The sand is much better than Galveston!

Other happenings during Spring Break:

Monday- Austin had a wellness visit at the doctor. Austin's eyes had started having extra discharge and the pediatrician said it was either allergies or mild pink eye. He gave me prescriptions for both. The pharmacist said the prescribed eye drops could possibly cause burning and irritation. Sure enough, after I used them Austin cried that his eyes hurt the rest of the day and rubbed them incessantly. The whites of his eyes were scary red-looking in the outer corners for the next 5 days.

I took all the boys to a cool park about 20 minutes away for our outing for the day. It was miserable on my end as I dealt with a cranky Austin the entire time and couldn't find anything that would distract him from rubbing his eyes.

Matt and I played tennis that night after Austin was in bed. We've been playing with higher frequency lately, and it was one of our closer matches where Matt won in a tie breaker 7-6, 13-11.

Tuesday- Poison ball in the morning, beach in the afternoon. Carter had a baseball practice late afternoon and then I took Carter rollerblading at a skating rink with his new (early) birthday present. It was fun to have some one-on-one time with him.

Wednesday- The boys begged to go back to the beach again even though I was stressed getting ready for my pi party I was hosting that night. They helped clean up and fold laundry so that we had time to go.

My pi party was a lot of fun that night! We had a pie crust demo and I shared tips that I had researched about how to make the best flaky pie crust. Every one got to take home their own 5" pie crust, we sampled everyone's pies, and we also did a "history of pi quiz."

While I was hosting my pi party, Matt went to his parent's house to help with a fan that fell out of the ceiling. While fixing it, a metal bracket came lose and sliced his hand requiring 2 stitches!

Thursday- Poison ball in the morning and we relaxed in the afternoon. We hosted dinner and games with Jared and his family later that night.

Friday- We went to a trampoline park in the morning, had a friend over in the afternoon, and Carter had a birthday party and baseball practice in the afternoon. Matt and I also played tennis later that night again.

Throughout the week, Caleb and Carter have enjoyed watching March Madness which they are both obsessed with (Caleb more than Carter) since they filled out brackets. They both have been constantly checking their brackets on my computer to see how they are holding up compared to the rest of their cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Spring Break is always a much-needed recess from the school grind!

The week before Spring Break, Caleb participated in a wax museum, a major grade for Social Studies. He did a research project and then dressed up as a person from history. Each child was on display while parents walked around. Here is Caleb's project:

Wernher Von Braun: leader of the team that built the first V-2 missile for Hitler during WWII (not good) but later became a US citizen and was very influential in rocket development and space exploration in the U.S.

Spring Break 2016

Our big plan for the week was camping Thursday, Friday, and Saturday though we were concerned that the weather forecasted rain.

Monday: We went to my sister's house for a birthday lunch and dessert. It happened to be pi day, so our favorite peanut butter pie was appropriate.

Tuesday: I was asked to play the piano at a baptism. I may or may not have bribed my boys with ice cream if they would be on their best behavior since I was going to be on my own with 3 kids and a baby. (The main struggle is Carter and Bryson fighting over silly things.)

Then we went to the temple as part of a Duty to God requirement for Cub Scouts.

Wednesday: My attempt at being "fun" that day was a Redbox movie (Hotel Transylvania 2) and a Sonic ice cream

**After watching the weather all week and seeing a 60-80% chance of rain Thursday night and Friday day, we decided to cancel camping. Carter especially was very upset.

Thursday: We went to the library and rode the trolley, then got together that night for hamburgers and hot dogs with my family.

St. Patrick's day!
We all wore lots of green and had a green banana/peanut butter smoothie for breakfast.

Friday we had some friends over to play in the morning. As a way to make up for not going camping, we promised the older boys we would take them to an America Ninja Warrior gym. All the younger cousins got together to dye Easter eggs...

While older cousins had a blast doing this...

Caleb made it up the [kid] warped wall and paused to flex his muscles!

Taking pictures with some warriors who have actually been on the show!

Because it did not rain at all that weekend, Matt decided to take the 3 older boys on an impromptu camping trip at a friend's property in the area. They roasted marshmallows and had the experience they wanted!

Saturday: Neighborhood Easter egg hunt and seeing the movie Zootopia. (I stayed home with the baby.)

I think the boys enjoyed their week off of school!

Spring Break Day 5

I think Friday was the most fun day.  The weather was warmer on Friday, but still started out pretty cool, so we planned a picnic lunch and beach swimming for the afternoon.  Matt got a half day off work and met us at the beach on the way home.  The conditions couldn't be more perfect: secluded spot all to ourselves; white, cool sand felt wonderful on your feet; water a bit cold but everyone adjusted just fine.

Everyone stepping into the water for the first time.  Matt and Zane trying to take each other down.

Matt found a clam

 Caleb showing the clam

All the boys playing together

Carter splashing through the water.  If I remember correctly, this is his first beach experience.  It was just a creek and not the ocean, so we were just missing some waves.  But he didn't know the difference!

Running like a basilisk lizard on the water!

All ready to jump in the water with Grandpa

Grandma with the two babies.  She had just finished feeding Lili.

Working on a sand resort

The finished product.  This picture doesn't give it justice.

If the sun ever went behind the clouds, Carter and Gavin found it was too cold!

 Buried in the sand

Then it was the daddy's turn to be buried!

It was such an enjoyable day!!!
