General Conference & The Family Proclamation

In an effort to get the kids more actively listening and participating in General Conference, I spent time making this activity board where we could keep track of the main topics that each speaker addressed. I personally loved the visual! Some of my kids got into it better than others. :)

In between the Saturday conference sessions, we celebrated finishing our family goal for 2018 by going out for ice cream: memorizing The Family: A Proclamation to the World. It took us through March 2019 to finish mostly because we weren't rushing; we wanted to make sure we knew it well. It was such a fun and rewarding goal to work on together! It brought such a spirit of unity--just naturally each of us knows some bits of it better than others. All of us working together, we can repeat it almost flawlessly. When we try to say it individually, there is more struggling. I love the parallel to how we need each other as a family in this life, working together and helping each other. Caleb and Carter know the whole thing well. Bryson knows about the first 4 paragraphs with help. Austin will randomly join in for certain words or lines when we say it. Just as we still say The Living Christ from memory weekly together as a family from our 2015 family goal, we plan to continue saying The Family Proclamation and hopefully keep it memorized for a long time. There are such powerful beliefs and testimonies in both that we want these to be anchors in our boys' lives.

Carter's 9th Birthday

Carter opened presents first thing in the morning. We've really enjoyed the game Splendor!

With his birthday on a Saturday, we had baseball to fill the day. Unfortunately Carter's team lost their game, but the team sang 'Happy Birthday' and enjoyed cupcakes.

Birthday buddies

Matt had a brisket competition that night for an Elder's Quorum activity, so we were able to snag a few pieces of brisket for dinner, which Carter and I love. It was yummy!

I felt loved and appreciated by the friends/family who stopped by or wished me a happy birthday!

Grandma and Grandpa came over for a steak dinner on Sunday (official birthday dinner for Carter/me/Matt) and to wish Carter a happy birthday. We had the leftover cupcakes I made for the baseball team--cookie dough-filled cupcakes.

Carter is a hard worker in everything he does: school, piano, and baseball. So far Carter is a straight-A student with excellent conduct marks. At baseball practices, Carter is out there hustling the whole time. Piano is not a favorite activity, however, and Carter and I butt heads quite a bit. It takes both of us consciously being patient with each other for a piano practice to go well when I sit down with him. Piano doesn't come as easily and naturally to him as Caleb, which I think is hard for him to see his older brother so celebrated for this talent. He asks to quit often, but he knows that if he wants us paying for baseball, then he needs to keep pushing on in piano.

Carter is our best worker in the yard and cleaning bathrooms. He is not afraid to get dirty and do the "gross" jobs. If his dad is out working in the yard, Carter likes to be out there helping. We love that so much about him! Occasionally, just to be nice, Carter will come home from school and sweep the leaves in the driveway. He's not afraid to clean toilets and has also been a big help in the past if Austin had a poopy accident in his underwear.

Matt and I also love that Carter is our most adventurous eater! He will try everything and likes most everything he tries. He is starting to have a humongous appetite which gives me a glimpse of what teenage years might be like trying to keep the house stocked with 4 boys!

In our Family Home Evenings and home church, Carter is the best listener and is always quick to give thoughtful answers to the questions we ask.

Matt's birthday was on Tuesday, April 2nd. I sneakily got up early and made one of Matt's favorite cookies--snickerdoodles--and showed up at the end of seminary so that the class and I could sing 'Happy Birthday' to him. Some students wrote notes as well, which Matt appreciated. It was a good start to his day.

Spring Break 2019

Keeping the boys entertained for Spring Break is a must. Otherwise they are at each other's throats and wanting to watch TV all day long!

Monday we got together with friends and the boys played poison ball (aka never-ending dodgeball).

Tuesday we saw How to Train a Dragon 3 in the theaters and the boys played with friends in the afternoon.

Wednesday we played in the nice sand at a creek near our house. Then we made slime and oobleck in the afternoon. We also played our new Harry Potter game that Caleb got for Christmas.

Matt took Thursday and Friday off of work, which is a big deal. He hasn't had many vacation days since starting his new company. So Thursday we made a 3 1/2 hour drive to an amusement park early in the morning, played all day, then drove home that night getting home at 10pm.

Our cousin, Sam, came with us. It was nice to have a girl in our party!

Friday/Saturday we went camping with 3 of my siblings and their families.
Friday afternoon hike

Camping isn't my favorite activity mostly due to all the work before and after combined with not sleeping well, but my kids all enjoy it and love spending time with their cousins. We enjoyed s'mores and cobbler all together and gathering around the fire to talk and share some funny and scary stories. Everyone slept pretty well during the night. It got down to 45 degrees so we were all chilled but stayed warm in our sleeping bags.

Hot chocolate Saturday morning

Austin and Morgan are good buds because they hang out together frequently.

We all enjoyed the break this week! A break from school, baseball, and seminary for Matt. Everyone got to sleep in a little longer and be lazier. It was some much-needed fun and relaxation!

Girls' Trip

A friend at church put the plans for a girls' trip in action! Her parents have a timeshare in Huntington Beach, California. Once cheap plane tickets were found, the trip was in motion. I decided initially not to go because our lives are really hectic right now and it happened to be the same weekend as the half marathon race I signed up for. I hemmed and hawed for a few days with Matt encouraging me to go, and once I checked with my parent's schedule, I decided to book the trip! I was able to defer my race to next year. (It was going to be iffy whether I was going to PR or not, so taking a year off actually took a lot of pressure off.)

We flew out Wednesday afternoon. After landing and getting a rental car, we went to Café Rio for dinner. It felt like 9:30pm to us even though it was 7:30 California time, so we were all starved. It was yummy! Then we got settled into the house. It was a tight fit, but we didn't mind being cozy.

Thursday we spent all day at Disneyland. Taking pictures wasn't a focus--some ladies did better than others about snapping a few--but I actually didn't end up with any pictures of me. Disneyland was a ton of fun! My favorite ride in California Adventure was the Cars ride and Indiana Jones was my favorite ride in Disneyland. Having experienced both now, I prefer Disney World to Disneyland, but I'm still looking forward to taking my kids once. (Then we'll frequent Disney World after that.) It was a full, exhausting day which ended with a good friend losing her phone on the last ride. Not the best end to the day. :(

Two friends that used to live in our area but have since moved to California joined us for the trip. It was fun to see them again!

Friday morning started with a run along the beach followed by games.

Then we went on a walk and did some sightseeing and ate lunch.

We spent Friday afternoon at the beach enjoying the view. We laid out on towels and chatted or read books.

Friday evening we went to a hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant that was so yummy! We played more games and stayed up way too late talking.

Saturday morning we had to wash all the sheets and towels before our late afternoon flight. Due to the rain, we stayed in and played more games while the laundry was going.

The timeshare was beautiful--5 minutes away from the beach and 20 minutes away from Disneyland.

Waiting at the airport

Eating an early dinner at the airport

It was so enjoyable to get away and take a break from being "Mom" for a few days. It was also delightful to get to know these ladies better.

My parents were so kind to help out with getting the boys off to school each morning since Matt was teaching seminary, watch Austin during the day, then help with the after school demands. Unfortunately Austin and Bryson weren't feeling well on Saturday with some fevers, and then Caleb threw-up Saturday afternoon (he said it was the combination of drinking a Fanta strawberry drink and then being outside for 2 back-to-back baseball scrimmages that caused it). I was hoping things would be a little easier for Matt, but for the most part, all went smoothly at home.

Catch-up

We enjoyed the slow pace of January--playing games together and enjoying no commitments at night. The pace started picking up in February when baseball started. Baseball adds a lot of busyness, but my boys love it so much!

Matt is coaching Carter’s team and assistant coaching Caleb’s team on occasion when it doesn’t overlap with Carter’s schedule. I have yet to see either of the boys’ games though—lots of rained out games so far this season or they have had late games where I stay home and put the kids to bed since Matt is coaching. Both boys have had one win and one loss so far. Carter has also had one tied game. It’s looking like both boys’ teams will likely come in 2nd place. We will see how the rest of the season goes. They are both playing shortstop and the outfield on occasion. Carter has pitched once; Caleb hasn’t pitched yet. I hear they are both playing well; Matt’s dad will text me updates throughout the games, which is so nice of him. I love watching them play so I hope to get to a game soon!

Matt is burning the candle from both ends. On top of working all day and coaching baseball 3 nights a week, he is teaching an early morning seminary class. (For the record, I tried to talk him out of coaching baseball.) I keep waiting for him to crack. I think I would have by now! Teaching seminary is so taxing and it takes a toll on the whole family. I’ve stepped up doing more things on my own that we used to share in an effort to support him, the kids see less of their dad, and we are doing less date nights. It’s a rough patch for our family for sure. We’ve all been looking forward to Spring Break in order to catch a breath. All that said, I think teaching seminary has been a wonderful thing for Matt.

Each of the boys is doing well in school and piano. Caleb just had to make some decisions about what electives to take next year in junior high. There are some great options. The tougher decisions were whether to continue choir or not and whether he should play football or not. (In order to be in the Athletics PE class, it's mandatory to play football.) He decided yes on both accounts. He also recently took a 3-hour 8th grade math test to try to test out of 8th grade math. (He is currently in 6th grade taking 7th grade math.) Since I taught 8th grade math, I helped him prepare for the test, but it is quite the feat to teach a whole year of math in just a few weeks. There were 65 questions on the test, and he needs to score an 80 or above to skip that math grade so we will see how he does! We discussed that passing the test and skipping a grade in math isn't necessarily the best option, but that studying hard and possibly passing the test just kept options open to make the best decision.

Carter struggled at the beginning of the year with making friends with the other boys in his class. He just had difficulty connecting with them and felt they were too silly and immature. He begged me to eat lunch with him every day as he felt alone at lunch. (You have to sit with your homeroom class.) I would come two or three times a week and bring different card games to play with him after he finished eating. It was some great bonding time. After a fall teacher conference where I mentioned it off-handedly, one of Carter's teachers said she was okay with Carter sitting with a friend at another table. He did that for the next few months and then finally started connecting with a friend in his class. Now he sits with that friend every day.

I have to walk on eggshells with Bryson every school morning. Little things set him off and he will announce, "Fine! I'm not going to school today!" He is not a morning person and moves very slowly. I have to put positive spins on trying to get him to move at a faster pace. It is definitely improved from the beginning of the year, but he still has his stubborn moments. He always comes home from school happy and in a good mood. His kindergarten teacher does some really fun and creative things. But getting him to school on time some days...

Austin and I do 15-20 minutes of school together every day at his request. He is such an intelligent kid! I love spending time with him and having him be my buddy throughout the day. We go to a free dance fitness class two times per week where he gets to play with his cousin while his mom and Aunt do a workout. I also swap going to the temple every other Tuesday with a friend. Austin struggled at first going to her house because he is a homebody. It has taken some bribery, but he does much better now. I love going to the temple more often than I have in the past. I am also starting up tennis once a week with a friend on Thursday mornings. We have to find creative ways to entertain our boys (sidewalk chalk, bubbles, toys) and we have to stop a lot, but we're giving it a try. My nights are so busy with baseball so we decided to attempt during the day.

Piano is going well for each of the boys. I don't spend as much time with Bryson as I should--it's just exhausting by kid number 3, especially because I teach lessons to 6 piano students each week. Carter and I still have some fighting during his piano practicing. He doesn't love it and wants to quit. The deal is if you want to play baseball, you'll play piano (and thank me later). If I concentrate on complimenting him a ton, then things go better and he doesn't complain. The tricky part is when I have to correct him on something... Caleb has such a passion for piano and is so motivated. He is progressing really well in the Suzuki method and is mostly independent. He just finished learning and memorizing a difficult 7-page Sonata.

I am serving as the children's music leader at church and am loving it! I hope I serve in this calling for a long time. It is a lot of work and some weeks go better than others, but it is a great outlet for me on this year off of preschool. It is neat to study the words and background information about the songs and come up with creative ways to teach them.

Life keeps moving on at a steady pace. I need to do better at recording the ins and outs as an attempt to bottle up these precious moments of parenthood.

First Time Giving Blood

There was a local blood drive opportunity where they were begging for donors. In the past I've always had the excuse of nursing or being pregnant as a reason not to donate--in truth I was nervous to try because I know both my mom and older sister have issues with fainting. But I have always done just fine having my blood drawn during pregnancies that I decided to man up and give it a try. When I arrived for my appointed time, I saw other donors lying down with a huge bag of their blood rocking in a machine next to the donor. That made my stomach queasy. I was kind of hoping as I went through the preliminary screening process that I wouldn't qualify as one of my friends did. Then I would have an easy out. But all went smoothly as they checked that I was a suitable donor. Matt was at a baseball scrimmage with Caleb so I had the younger 3 boys with me. A friend offered to take my boys home to her house--having never donated before I didn't realize it was a semi-long process. Austin decided to go home with her, but Carter and Bryson were excited and curious about it all because they knew I was nervous so they opted to stay.

A nurse got me set up and told me it would take 5-10 minutes. Despite my nerves, everything went well! I squeezed my the stress ball, looked at my phone, and when the nurse came over after about 6 minutes, I was so proud that I had done it! My blood saved 3 lives! Except that the nurse wasn't coming to take everything off and tell me I was done as I had assumed. She said my blood had slowed down (even though I had been squeezing my stress ball the whole time!) and that instead she needed to stick the needle in further. That was the beginning of the end. Pushing the needle in further hurt and started the queasiness. It soon felt like a ton of tiny spiders were crawling up my body. I alerted the nurse that I didn't feel very well, and then all went black.

Some unknown amount of time later, someone was annoyingly waking me up out of the best deep sleep. As I came to, two nurses were fanning me, putting ice packs on me, and asking me if I knew where I was right now. They also asked me what I had had to eat that day. My answer of french toast for breakfast and roasted veggies for lunch didn't make them very happy, and they said that's the reason I had fainted. I decided not to mention that I had run 10 miles that morning as well.

They asked me to continue squeezing the stress ball to finish up, which surprised me. A few minutes later, they pulled the needle out. I think I was able to donate enough blood? By that point, I had called Matt. Caleb's scrimmage was over and he rushed over to take the kids home for Caleb to babysit and then came back so he could drive me home. They had to keep checking my vitals to make sure everything was stable enough for me to go home. I felt horrible because I was the last appointment of the day, so they were all cleaned up and ready to be done for the day except waiting on me. I was grateful to finally get home, and Matt took care of the kids so I could take a late afternoon nap. I felt much better when I woke up and less shaky after a good dinner. Giving blood is not something I anticipate doing again in the future. :-/
