He Still Gets to Me

6 years together and "he still gets to me" to quote George Strait.  Nobody is perfect (I still can't get him to stop leaving his socks out around the house--he claims it's a "fun" little treasure hunt for me each day), but Matt is definitely an ideal husband and father.  Some things I love about Matt:

*I love playing sports with Matt--especially Ultimate Frisbee.  It's how we met and fell in love and one of our favorite activities to do together.  I love playing on his team because every time he gets the Frisbee, I can see that he naturally always looks for me before he throws it off--to me or someone else.  It's just a really cute, natural gesture that warms my heart.

*I don't know how he does it, but he almost always comes home in a good mood each day from work ready to pitch in and help--even if I'm not always in the best mood when I greet him.

*He is so unselfish; he considers my needs before his own.  Even if I begrudge him his "guy time" when he goes off to play sports etc., he is always supportive of my "need" to get away to go to a book club or play tennis with a friend or even to escape the boys and "mommy duty" for an hour to go read a book.

*I love playing games with Matt--especially playing on the same team as him for Spades or Rook.  He's a smart player.  Since we haven't had anyone of late who shares our obsession with Dominion, he and I will play alone often after the kids go to bed.  I love that we're both so competitive and hate to lose!

*He is the one of the greatest examples of service I know.  I'll be completely honest and say that my serving is sometimes with reluctance or irritation.  Matt genuinely loves to serve and wants to help people all the time!  It makes his day!  Now, however, he's married to a wife that reminds him that when he's off serving everyone, I'm doing extra "mommy duty" by myself when he could be home helping me.  One of these days I'll stop dragging him down and learn to be more charitable!

*Matt loves to talk to people and get to know people.  He is genuinely interested in everyone and wants to make everyone feel welcome or loved.  He has had several people come up to him personally at church and tell him how much they look forward to his handshakes/hugs and warm greetings each Sunday and what a difference it makes to them.  I love that he is so friendly with people and knows so many people, but I have also learned over the years that anytime there is a big gathering, specifically Stake Conference, I drive a separate car!  Otherwise, I'm left alone waiting for a good 45 minutes.

*I very much appreciate that Matt is a handy-man.  He loves to fix things and do things himself, especially when it comes to cars, and it saves us lots of money (something he knows makes me very happy!)

*He takes great interest in our children and is definitely the "fun parent," wrestling with the boys, building robots out of cardboard boxes with the boys, or any other crazy thing they come up with to do.

I love him and am grateful for the years we've shared together thus far.  I'm looking forward to years to come...I still have much to learn from him.

We spent our Anniversary going out to eat Friday night at a yummy steakhouse.  Saturday morning we got to sneak away and play Ultimate Frisbee together.  We didn't have a good turn-out of people, so it was only 3 on 4, which made for lots of running/sprinting up and down the field.  I am feeling very sore today as I played on the team of 3 (with Matt) and did lots of running, plus the 4 miles I ran prior to the game.

Later that day, we went to the temple with the boys for a Primary temple trip.  We love going to the temple on our anniversary, and going with the boys this time was a fun way to celebrate our marriage 6 years earlier in the exact same place!

I wanted a picture of Caleb touching the temple because of this quote:
"Remember this day you touched the temple. One day you will enter this door." President Monson has said, ‘As we touch the temple, the temple will touch us.’
I'm going to frame this picture with that quote to put in Caleb's room.

Carter--who refused to let me take a picture of him touching the temple--holding his paper of things we were looking for as we walked around the temple (fountain, Angel Moroni, etc.)

Anytime we have an outing where we're taking lots of pictures, Caleb really enjoys capturing a few pictures on camera.  I suggested he take some pictures of Mommy and Daddy that were similar to the ones we had taken on our wedding day.  He did a pretty good job (obviously I only posted the ones that turned out good).  I forgot to center this one, but here's Matt and I walking the temple grounds holding hands like we did on our wedding day.

We have a shot from our wedding day of Matt and I kissing in front of this same fountain.

Caleb took this picture of Angel Moroni--pretty good if I say so myself.

I suggested he take a picture of some of the pretty flowers along the temple grounds.

Posing on Caleb's command.

And here's the photographer himself, camera still around his neck.  He and I will have to take photography lessons from my sister-in-law!

Here's a picture of the kids who attended the temple outing.  A member of the temple presidency and his wife came down to talk with the kids and answer any questions they might have.  They said this was the largest group of Primary children they've had come to the temple.  If only they knew that this was only a small portion of our Primary!  This is about 35 kids of our Primary of 115 (not including our 30 nursery kids).

Being at the temple was a wonderful way to reminisce about our "warm" and wonderful temple day 6 years ago where Matt and I were sealed together for time and all eternity!

Caleb's Preschool Graduation

Caleb finished up preschool yesterday and is now academically ready for Kindergarten!  I have really enjoyed teaching Caleb these last two years as well as his classmates.  It gave me a teaching fix, and I loved being apart of every aspect of Caleb's learning.  It's going to be hard to relinquish control to his Kindergarten teacher!  I had a really good group of kids who were well-behaved and did well with putting up with Carter's antics at times.

My 8 students singing their favorite song from the year: Apples and Bananas

Presenting Caleb with his graduation certificate and his award.  He got the "Good Listener" award for his ability to follow directions to a T.  Some parents say it would be difficult to teach their own child for behavior reasons, but Caleb is just the opposite.  He is so well-behaved!  He is also very competitive and wanted to do just as well as anyone else in all aspects of learning, especially reading.  He's turned into such a great reader!

Opening the present my students gave me.  Each student colored a picture and wrote something they learned from me this year. Then one of the parents assembled them all into a laminated book.  I gave each of my students a photo book of all the activities we did throughout the year.

Even though I only taught a few days a week, I'm excited to be done teaching and be able to focus on other areas of my life.  It's been a treat to work with all the students, and Caleb specifically, plus a really neat learning experience for me.

On the Farm

At preschool this month, we have been talking about farm animals.  We took a field trip about 35 minutes away from home to a farm that has lots of animals, a train ride, pony rides, and a nice big park.

We had a great time with all our preschool friends!

Family Bowling

Caleb has been begging to go bowling for about the last 6 months.  We decided to make it a family day and take Carter for the first time.

Carter lost interest about halfway through, but he enjoyed it initially!

Acting Skills

One of the neatest experiences of my life so far was to be apart of this musical.  This is the first time our stake (several LDS local congregations form a stake) has put on a musical and it was of the parable of the 10 virgins from the book of Matthew in the New Testament.  Auditions came at a busy time in my life, but I felt like it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up to at least try-out.

I happened to play the piano for each woman as they tried out, and after the try-outs wrapped up, my confidence was low as the talent was so high.  I would not consider myself a soloist.  I don't think I have that great of a voice, although I was blessed with a really good ear for music.  (Play a note on the piano and I can tell you what it is...I'm not as good with other instruments, but still pretty accurate.)  Actually, my greater area of strength during the try-out I felt was the acting/reading portion.

So 10 virgin parts minus about 6 "shoe-ins" whose voices were amazing, minus the roles for 2 elderly women, the rest of us (about 20) were fighting for 2 spots.  I had already counted myself out and was planning on being a part of the choir.

I was completely shocked and humbled to be offered a role as one of the 10 virgins.  The play is called The Ten Virgins by Emily Freeman.  Each of the songs was written by a different artist.  The thought that went into each virgin was amazing.  Each virgin was a good woman, but some had stronger testimonies than others.  I played "Malka," a woman who is loyal, but my lamp was so beautiful that I was afraid to take it out in case it would break it.  Instead I put it on display in my home for all my friends to admire.  Malka is a young girl, 12-18 years old, who is pretty frivolous and silly.  I definitely would not consider myself a "silly" girl, so this role was a little intimidating.

Because I thought it was such a great honor to even be participating in the play, I took everything really seriously.  I had my parts and song memorized within 10 days, which was mostly due to a misunderstanding on my part of when we were supposed to have everything memorized.  Our director is a really talented singer and actress who has played major roles in local musicals, so I soaked in all her advice and thoughts.  Matt actually helped me quite a bit by letting me "perform" in front of him many, many times and giving me advice on how to loosen up more and "become Malka".

After several Saturday and some weeknight rehearsals, I was really happy with the end product of the whole show.  We performed twice; the first was a dress rehearsal in front of family members and the second night was in front of all the women in the stake.  I was the "comic relief" of the show with my twirling and dancing with my lamp.  For a story that is very serious as each virgin reflects on her worthiness to meet the Bridegroom, I think the role of Malka was a welcome reprieve from the seriousness and I got several laughs from the audience.

It was an unforgettable experience that I will always be glad I got the opportunity to be apart of.  I especially enjoyed really being able to reflect on each virgin's nature to look at my own personal worthiness at this time to meet my Savior again some day.  Especially with playing a "foolish" virgin, I got to experience what it might feel like to not be spiritually ready when the Savior comes again.

Overall, just an incredible experience!

Egg Hunting

Carter sure loved dyeing Easter eggs this year. I don't think it compared to the hunt though. He loved gathering eggs knowing that a candy/toy was in each one!

Caleb is a very competitive little boy. He was very quick to gather as many eggs as he could!

Counting his eggs with cousin Dallin. After being proud of how many eggs he found, then Caleb was willing to share with his brother and cousins that didn't find as many. He may be fiercely competitive, but he is such a sweet boy.

Happy Birthday!

The end of March is a big time of year for our family. Carter and I share a birthday on the 30th, and Matt's birthday is 3 days after. Caleb always feels left out this time of year, so I made sure to plan his preschool birthday on March 27th so he could be part of the festivities as well.

For my birthday, Matt came home with a bouquet of flowers and some gift cards. Since my birthday fell on a Friday night, we also went to see Hunger Games with friends. We're not movie theater-goers so this was a special treat. (The last movie we saw in the theater was Harry Potter #7.) It's been a few years since I've read the book, but I felt that the movie didn't disappoint. I was thoroughly entertained and actually wanted to go back and read the book again.

I was pretty satisfied with the casting, and I only noticed a few details that were different or omitted from the book.

We did Carter's birthday on Sunday night with family. Carter was excited to have his own cake (which Ariane made for us as a combined cake for Matt, Carter, and I). It was yummy and so sweet of her.

Blowing out the candles with some extra help from his cousins.

Matt's birthday was a big one this year--#30. I gave him a book of memories that I collected from family and friends, and there's nothing Matt likes more than a party! So I organized a party for his big day as well. Unfortunately I forgot my camera. Bummer. We had a great time eating hamburgers and hot dogs, socializing, and playing at the park with the kids. Matt was in heaven with so many great friends there to mingle with.
