Easter 2016

Dying Easter eggs

Carter's eggs

We hosted Easter dinner this year. My parents were visiting my little sister who had just had a baby. After a yummy dinner, we went outside to do an egg hunt. We let the littlest kids go first followed by the eldest kids.

Bryson won the prize for gathering the most eggs! It was all strictly business to him whereas the other kids his age that got a head start only looked for a certain color or opened and ate while they hunted. Matt had to grab him another bag for his mission. Bryson only cared about winning, however, and was very happy to share once it was over.

Baby Austin was there too!

Camping

Since we missed camping with my family over Spring Break, we went over Good Friday.

Roasting marshmallows

We survived the night, but it wasn't pleasant. My warm-blooded husband who never gets cold brought ONE blanket for the two of us to share for the night. It got down to 43 and our tent had windows without covers to zip over them. I FROZE all night long! Caleb and Carter had warm sleeping bags and did just fine. I had brought warm bedding for the baby and Bryson. Lesson learned for next time my husband says he has our bedding covered = grab a few extra blankets.

We camped near a railroad track and who would have guessed that 9 trains go by in the night tooting their horns? Between the trains and the cold, I got very little sleep. Why do we go camping again? It's so much work and the lack of sleep hardly makes it worth it, except for the memories for the kids. :)

Breakfast the next morning: Matt made hash browns, eggs, and sausage.

Kara and Clayton also made pancakes

Bryson refusing to give me a smile

We also did some fishing and Ellery caught her first fish!

Spring Break 2016

Our big plan for the week was camping Thursday, Friday, and Saturday though we were concerned that the weather forecasted rain.

Monday: We went to my sister's house for a birthday lunch and dessert. It happened to be pi day, so our favorite peanut butter pie was appropriate.

Tuesday: I was asked to play the piano at a baptism. I may or may not have bribed my boys with ice cream if they would be on their best behavior since I was going to be on my own with 3 kids and a baby. (The main struggle is Carter and Bryson fighting over silly things.)

Then we went to the temple as part of a Duty to God requirement for Cub Scouts.

Wednesday: My attempt at being "fun" that day was a Redbox movie (Hotel Transylvania 2) and a Sonic ice cream

**After watching the weather all week and seeing a 60-80% chance of rain Thursday night and Friday day, we decided to cancel camping. Carter especially was very upset.

Thursday: We went to the library and rode the trolley, then got together that night for hamburgers and hot dogs with my family.

St. Patrick's day!
We all wore lots of green and had a green banana/peanut butter smoothie for breakfast.

Friday we had some friends over to play in the morning. As a way to make up for not going camping, we promised the older boys we would take them to an America Ninja Warrior gym. All the younger cousins got together to dye Easter eggs...

While older cousins had a blast doing this...

Caleb made it up the [kid] warped wall and paused to flex his muscles!

Taking pictures with some warriors who have actually been on the show!

Because it did not rain at all that weekend, Matt decided to take the 3 older boys on an impromptu camping trip at a friend's property in the area. They roasted marshmallows and had the experience they wanted!

Saturday: Neighborhood Easter egg hunt and seeing the movie Zootopia. (I stayed home with the baby.)

I think the boys enjoyed their week off of school!

Austin at 6 months

Austin just had his 6-month check-up. He's meeting all his milestones and doing well. He's 25.5" long (9th percentile), 17 lb. 3oz (43rd percentile), and head measurement is 45.8 cm (93rd percentile). Translation: He is a short, fat baby with a huge head. Of all the boys, his measurements are spot on with Bryson's so he will have a very similar build. (And Bryson does have a huge head!)

The pediatrician mentioned that he is a very expressive, passionate baby. Most babies get excited just with their arms, but Austin gets excited with his whole body: shaking and leg kicking. Tonight while giving Austin a bath, Carter and I discussed together how Austin is just like a frog. We thought he was going to jump right out of his bath tub with how much frog kicking he was doing! Austin generally loves his Jumper toy and can really get going bouncing up and down--more so than any of my other boys!

He did well with his vaccinations, always the part that I detest.

1st Place

Carter had a single elimination soccer tournament last weekend. His team has done well all season only losing one game.

Carter's team with their coach. I believe they started the season with 5 players.

The fields and goals are smaller, so they only play 3 on 3. Whenever it was Carter's turn to sit out, he did sit-ups, jumping jacks, and push-ups on the sidelines. It was hilarious! He wanted to stay "warmed up" while sitting out. He took these games very seriously and gave it his all!

Although Carter is a very good player, there is one boy on his team who was the main reason their team did so well. Due to their record over the season, Carter's team only had to play twice in the tournament. The first game they won 12-0, Carter scored 4 goals. In the championship game, they won 8 to 2, Carter scored 1 goal.

Carter was so happy and wore his medal all day!

Half Marathon No. 6

As I have done after having all my babies, I signed up for a half marathon race to force myself to bounce back quickly. 3 weeks after baby #4, I set out for an easy 1-2 mile run. I ended up running 3 miles at a 9:35 pace because I felt great! (Perk to running throughout my pregnancy) I set a goal to run my half marathon at an 8:30 pace knowing that would be stretching my capabilities since the race was 6 months post baby.

This time training, I particularly struggled with pushing myself past 3 miles; I was content to stay at that distance. As I started adding on the miles, my speed wasn't improving very much at all. 2 months out from the race, I was running 8:55 miles for my long runs. I reluctantly admitted to myself that an 8:30 pace wasn't an attainable goal and 8:45 was more realistic, though it made me really sad.

I continued to trust the training process and push myself on my speed days (Tuesdays). Week by week, I started shaving off time pretty dramatically. I was afraid to be too hopeful. 3 weeks out from the race, I ran the whole 13.1 miles to gauge how I would perform for the race and I ran it at an 8:23 pace! I hoped to perform as well or better on race day.

There is so much anxiety leading up to the race...will I eat the right food the night before that settles well? Will I experience some unexpected cramping? Will I injure myself? Will the weather be right? etc. All the stars aligned, and I was able to have a terrific run! My finishing time was 1:49:32 or an 8:21 pace. I finished #27 in my age group (30-35) and #136 overall (out of 1800 runners). My Personal Record is 1:48:05 in 2012 when I was 5 weeks pregnant with Bryson. Fastest mile was the last at 7:45 and slowest mile was 8:35.

Most annoying part of the race: My shoe came untied at mile 5, again at mile 8, and again at mile 12. I just left it untied at that point because I didn't have the energy to bend down and stand back up again!

The thing I regret most about the race: what I wore! I planned to wear shorts and a running shirt when the temperature was predicted to be 54-57 degrees. Throughout the week, the predicted temperature kept dropping. When I saw that the morning was going to start around 45 degrees, I wore long pants and a jacket that I knew I would remove. I should have stuck with my original plan and toughed out the pre-race waiting in the cold.

2 Tender Mercies: #1 Austin slept through the night for the first time the night before the race. He typically will wake up once per night around 4 am. I knew if he did that that I would have a difficult time going back to bed for an hour with pre-race jitters. At 5 am, I went up to wake him and feed him. He was laying in his bed awake playing with his stuffed giraffe! I was so grateful for the uninterrupted sleep!
#2 I didn't have to stop during the race for bathroom troubles that I typically have. When I run long distances, it just tends to get my digestive system a movin' and a groovin'!

It was so fun to see my parents at the race and have their support. They were waiting at the finish line, but I also saw them at the last half mile. I was already giving everything I had at that point in the race; when I saw them, I had the energy to give a little more! Matt + boys got there just after I crossed the finish line, but I was grateful to have them there as well.

I love running! I love the way it makes me feel, I love the challenge of pushing myself to improve, and I love seeing what the body can accomplish. What an amazing feat to be so close to my PR 6 months after having a baby!! I was super proud of what I accomplished. :)

Past races:
Half Marathon #1 (2009) 1:58:45
Half Marathon #2 (2010) 1:57:47 (8 months post baby)
Half Marathon #3 (2011) 1:52:13
Half Marathon #4 (2012) 1:48:05
Half Marathon #5 (2013) 1:54:18 (4 months post baby)
Half Marathon #6 (2016) 1:49:32 (6 months post baby)

Marathon #1 (2011) 4:28:34
Marathon #2 (2014) 3:58:08

*Just as a side-note, it is so tricky to work breastfeeding in before and after running a race!

Boys' Journal

Caleb: 8 years old, 3rd grade
(This picture emphasizes how small Caleb is for his age!)

He came home from school yesterday excited about his artwork that was chosen to be entered into a contest. I exclaimed, "Man, Caleb, you're good at everything you do!" He responded, "I know, my life is so easy." That pretty much sums things up for him! He seems to excel at everything he does from school to sports to piano.

Since starting school, Caleb has received all As on every report card, but this year things seem to be clicking really well. He's finally enjoying reading and it has become his favorite subject (simply because he doesn't love his math teacher this year). He hasn't made below a 97 on his report card so far this year.

Caleb is a natural athlete. He just finished up a season of basketball. Though his team struggled overall, Caleb caught on quickly and was a good asset to the team. He just started a season of baseball and though he is the youngest player on his team (8-10 year olds), he has secured a reputation for being very consistent. He misses playing soccer, since that was another sport that he shined in, but it's difficult to fit in all these sports. He gets to play soccer every day at recess with his friends at school.

The other week in school, the students voted on a boy and a girl "star student." Caleb was unanimously voted the boy star student. He is so well-behaved at school and church (not always at home...), very thoughtful and considerate of those around him.

Caleb is super competitive in everything he does! One example is that he is determined to be the top student in the school for running laps. In PE, they have a certain portion of time set aside for running laps. Most kids choose to walk, but not Caleb. He won a $5 gift card to Sonic last year for being the top student and ran an equivalent of 25 miles--almost a marathon. He thinks he is going to beat that this year.

A few weeks ago, Caleb accompanied a musical number for the first time ever. He played "I Am a Child of God" while some cousins/friends sang at Dallin's baptism. Accompanying and just playing a song are two different ballgames. He did a great job!

A funny thing about Caleb is that he is a germaphobe. If someone is sick, he gives him a wide berth and washes his hands often. He constantly asks questions such as, "If someone has asthma at school, could I catch it?" All the caution must work well because I can't remember the last time he was sick!

He is an awesome big brother and very helpful around the house. That said, he does not like helping with chores that are too dirty (bathrooms, weeding, etc.). His kind of chores are vacuuming and picking up toys.

Carter: almost 6 years old, Kindergarten

He was very mischievous when he was 3-4, so I'm pretty shocked that he has also turned into a boy who does not step one foot out of line at school and church. Though it took awhile, he now says that he likes school and seems to be excelling well.

He finally has gained the confidence to ride his bike to school. The first week of school, he accidentally crashed into someone (it gets quite congested on the sidewalks) and caused both him and that kid to fall. He refused to ride his bike to school after that until a few weeks ago. He's speedy fast on his scooter too, so he could keep up just fine.

Carter is proving to be a soccer star as well. We put him in a more competitive league this season; he is one of the youngest on his team (5-7 year olds) but holds his own just fine. He has learned to kick harder and aim well when shooting goals. He's also a good team player, passing the ball to his teammates.

I'm continuing to teach Carter piano. He's excited about it most of the time.

A problem that we have with Carter is his lying. He does not want to get in trouble for things so he will lie and say someone else did it (usually blames things on Bryson). Our house came with cameras and it took awhile for Matt to get them hooked up, but now we just say, "Alright, we're going to go look at the cameras to know what happened." Then the truth will come out. We've had so many lessons/discussions about it but it continues to be a problem.

Carter is absolutely obsessed with babies and does not understand their personal space. The first thing he does in the morning and when he gets home from school is greet baby Austin.

Bryson 3 years old

Some of Bryson's rough edges are starting to smooth out. He can be the sweetest boy and also an absolute pill. :) He is at a fun age where he is discovering new things all the time and able to communicate well.

Bryson is a Sunbeam at church this year. I was super nervous about the transition because I knew it would be hard for him to see me at the front of the Primary room. Due to a recent ward split, we started the year off with many substitutes, so I had Matt help out with Bryson's class for this adjustment. Now he is doing so well with staying in his chair though there have been a total of 3 weeks where Bryson has fallen asleep during Primary (1pm church; he still naps every few days). If he sees me in the room, he'll call out, "Hi Mommy!" He loves it when he gets a turn to come up and help with something.

As all my boys were at this age, Bryson is obsessed with Daddy. He is super sad when Matt leaves for work most days. If he wakes up in the middle of the night, he usually just wants Daddy (which I'm fine with!).

Bryson is terrified of Mommy or Daddy being angry at him. If he does something wrong, he is quick to apologize to avoid a time-out. He'll cry if he thinks we're mad at him.

Just like his older brothers, Bryson wants to take a turn practicing the piano as well. For instance, if I tell Carter it's time to practice, Bryson will jump on and insist it's his turn.

As is typical with this age I'm learning, Bryson wants to be a helper for everything! He loves to help me cook and help in the yard.

Bryson has been really stubborn about wanting help to say his prayer each day. Within the last week, he finally has declared that he can say prayers all by himself!

There have been a few instances recently where his mischief has led to potentially scary consequences. It's a testament to God's protecting hand in our lives, and I'm so grateful!

Bryson sleeps with Caleb most nights. It helps Bryson sleep through the night and it helps Caleb feel less scared himself so it's a win for everyone.

Austin 6 months
Trying rice cereal for the first time @ 5 months

He is a Momma's boy and his eyes follow me around if I'm in the same room. Recently, if I set him down to try to do something, he all out wails. It makes my day super fun. He's also in the stage where he grabs for everything which makes doing things while holding him very tricky.

Eating food is progressively getting better. He's tried rice/oatmeal cereal, green beans, sweet potatoes, carrots, prunes, and applesauce.

He has slept through the night 3 nights in a row (knock on wood!!) going to bed around 7pm and waking up around 6am. It feels amazing to get uninterrupted sleep! That's been the hardest thing 4th time around as I get older.

Austin has just as much hair as the day he was born. I suppose it's a good thing that he has such short hair because he has a bald spot on the back of his head. We also think he's going to keep his brown eyes like Caleb and their Dad.

As the 4th child, he often has to work around our schedule of running the boys to their activities. I feel badly some days that he doesn't get the nap schedule he needs to be a happy boy.

Austin is full of smiles and laughs, and we all love him to pieces!
